There are a lot of reasons why you might select a natural shampoo. People like to use shampoos that they feel are “green.” Others find that natural ingredients lead to healthier hair. Natural shampoo is often found to be easier on dyed hair. Finally, you might like natural shampoos because they frequently double as soothing body washes.
But the word natural can be deceptive. Sometimes it simply indicates the presence of natural ingredients. Natural ingredients generally means anything that comes from nature. This means that a shampoo might contain a few natural ingredients and a lot of unnatural ones. Generally a few preservatives or dyes can be okay. If you do have sensitive skin though you could have more trouble with colors and fragrances. The serious ingredients that you should look for may undo positive benefits of natural ingredients.
Always watch for laureth- or lauryl sulfate. This makes shampoo foam. But it also will strip your hair. The result is hair that is brittle and weak. Also, it undermines color treatments. Excessive lauryl sulfate in shampoos end up lightening and dulling hair. When you read ingredients avoid anything with the words lauryl or laureth.
Also, you should keep an eye out for sulfur and sulfides. These ingredients are common in dandruff shampoos. Technically, you could argue that sulfur is actually a natural ingredient. But in some cases it can make skin conditions worse and cause dandruff. If you choose to use a sulfur based shampoo, keep it out of your eyes. You might also get resulting hair that is drier than you like.
Natural shampoos tend to share common characteristics:
* They do not have a lot of ingredients - Most of the ingredients in shampoos are artificial. Most natural shampoos will just have a base of soap and a few other ingredients.
* You get little foam with natural shampoo - This is because most foam is caused by natural agents.
* They often contain ingredients you would look for in your kitchen - Do not be surprised to see apple cider vinegar, herbs or baking soda. Many people actually wash their hair just with baking soda, apple cider vinegar and water.
If you love your shampoo and have perfect hair, then stick with it! If you are on the prowl for a new natural shampoo, then be sure you are getting the real deal. The secret ingredients can cause some serious damage to your hair. Just be careful that your natural shampoo is the real deal before you start shampooing.
